Blogging: Creating Technorati Tags
I have seen many bloggers using tags lately. These are keywords that are searchable by people using Technorati. Technorati tracks 24 million sites. Technorati is a real-time search engine that keeps track of what is going on in the blogosphere — the world of weblogs. By posting to blogger.com I automatically ping Technorati and this lil'blog is searchable.
About Technorati. [incidently, I found this remarkable: The Pew Internet study estimates that about 11%, or about 50 million, of Internet users are regular blog readers. According to Technorati data, there are about 70,000 new blogs a day. Bloggers — people who write weblogs — update their weblogs regularly; there are about 700,000 posts daily, or about 29,100 blog updates an hour.]
By creating tags one can also create a category of the blog entry they are making. So I am going to use a script for Firefox (the browser I recommend as do millions of people who know what they are talking about as it pertains to the Internet) that will create tags. This is my first shot at it. So here goes:
Technorati Tags: Technorati, Tags, Blogging, Firefox
By clicking on any of these "tags" above - it will take you to Technorati's Tag page. There you will see thousands of other sites linked that also have been discussing (and tagging) that topic. Kind of interesting. Hopefully it will increase awareness of this blog, or potentially help someone searching for information on a topic I am blogging about.
Kinda neat stuff. I'll keep posting tags and see how it works.
BTW - found GREAT info on this from these sites:
Technorati: tagging on Blogger with Firefox and Greasemonkey
Technorati: tag creator for multiple word tags, and more

I use GreaseMonkey to enable 'scripts' to be run. Then I went to this site: A Consuming Experience: Technorati Explained to use this method. It adds a field at the bottom of Blogger when you are in html mode inputting an entry. You just type in the tags you want and it adds them. Pretty easy.
Found your post via Technorati's Help / How-To's page. Nice. One question I have about tags is what's good etiquette? I've been manually tagging and have been using 5 tags per post as a test. I've seen some posts with 20+ tags. Is there tagging etiquette, i.e. a general rule of thumb as to how many tags per post is advisable?
Also, as I've been exploring tags, I created a game to make browsing the top tags on Technorati a little more fun. Please check out TagMan and let me know what you think. Thanks.
Pretty cool game. I would like to know the name of the tag when i don't guess it correctly though. Other than that - it is a neat thing.
As for "netiquette" about posting too many tags... I have read a few tips about that. It is silly to post tags that no one else would ever tag or search for. So it would just be a waste of time I guess?
I am having some trouble with Technorati - I post something and tag it - yet when I search Technorati it doesn't show my own post. Kind of strange. I wonder If I am doing something wrong? Any ideas?
Now if I do a search of my own blog through technorati - it finds info for me. But, not through the tags I am posting. Odd.
Technorati tags just don't work, or they are selective in how they work.
That's pretty silly, really. I have yet to see one of my tags show up with a tag that doesn't link directly back to Technorati. I'm far from impressed.
Yeah, I have the same issue, David. My tags don't appear to show up, even though I am manually pinging my blog each time I update. Hmmmm...
It'll be interesting to see if my traffic increases at all.
it seems to have gotten better for me over time. definitely there is a lag of some time period. but, it is nice when someone does a search on technorati - they will find your blog. It is also very nice to see that people are coming to my site now from places like microsoft search and google. they weren't before i was tagging.
hopefully it'll help you down the road MrChris. It is also nice to put the Technorati search on your blog. It is very effective for searching the blog entries.
Quick note, your page would be easier to read even with a black background but white ink instead of this current color selection. ;-)

It all sounds nice but these technorati people have their problems. Getting support is like pulling teeth.
I added the technorati search engine, added my blog and after two weeks one one page is indexed, the system show no links to the blog when there are in fact many links, the one response I got from support gave instructions that I followed and still nothing. Follow up request for support have gone unanswered.
What does one have to do to get their attention and support?
Hmm, looks like I posted a comment here a year ago. Back this time to let you know about TagBuildr. It's a tool to create tags in a format that Technorati will pick up, but without having to link to the Technorati site. After all, don't you think they have enough links? ;-)
Thanks Richard - I'll check it out.
